NDTA Senior Tournament September 2009

Tewantin Tennis Club once again generously hosted the NDTA Senior Tournament over the weekend of 26th & 27th September.

On a unusually hot September Saturday, players from the various NDTA affiliated clubs competed in mens and ladies doubles with the mixed doubles following on the Sunday.

Two pairs entered the mens doubles, giving them the opportunity to play a full match. The winners were John Schmitt & Martin Abbott over Dennis Cervino & James Manns.

The ladies doubles was divided into Div 1 & 2. In Division 1, Donna Butler (Tewantin) & Rhonda Vickers (Tewantin) defeated Dorelle Goldsworthy (Cooroy) & Lisa Spence (Coolum). Division 2 was won by Noriko Farrell (Tewantin) & Joy Van Zetan with Bronwyn Quinn & Judith Watkins (Tewantin) runners-up.

The mixed doubles on Sunday saw a good number of entries and was divided into A & B divisions.

The B division had five pairs playing in round robin format. The final tally had Donna Butler and Noel Brown in first place with Julie Ziakas (Coolum) & Michael Curtain (Coolum) just pulling ahead of Cheryl & Jackson Taylor (Tewantin) to take the runners up prize.

Six pairs entered the A division, playing three sets to nine games with the leading pairs on each court playing off for winner and runner-up. The pairs were all very evenly matched, making for a strong standard of enjoyable tennis. The winners were Ralph Amitrand & Katharina Stuckler, runners up Dennis Cervino (Tewantin) & Lisa Spence (Coolum).

Thanks must go to the Tewantin players for supplying snacks & refreshments, and to organisers Arthur Ziakas on Saturday & Lisa Spence, Rob Schmitt & Julie Ziakas on Sunday.

Next year, the committee is considering scheduling the senior tournaments on the same day as the juniors- i.e the singles tournament around April & the doubles in August. This should make for a sociable day for families as well as a way of encouraging older juniors to make the transition to senior tournaments and fixtures.
